Beth Jorgensen- Parent of an IA Student & IA Teacher for 5 years
Teacher Perspective
Q: As a teacher, what do you see in students with their determination and potential?
A: Students tend to be highly motivated, hardworking, and goal oriented, and these attributes are what make them successful at IA.
Q: How are you as a teacher ensuring to teach students in the best possible way and enrich their education
A: Teachers work collaboratively to create course content for the MYP and DP requirements for the IB program. Units are created and updated regularly to ensure students are getting the best possible content.
Q: What amazes you about the students here in which you won’t see in other schools
A: The smallness in the campus allows students to develop rich relationships within their class, other classes and grade levels. There is far less bullying and fights compared to other schools and the student body tends to be more caring and compassionate.
Q: What makes your job remarkable here and are you proud of your students’ success on a daily basis
A: The opportunity to teach a skill that is valuable throughout life is what makes my job remarkable. I teach speech/public speaking, and it isn't required in other schools, but at IA it is a required course that students can take with them to whatever profession they desire. Also yes, my students are on task, turn assignments on time, and do a good job. They don't feel they need to be rewarded because of their great performance, but they still do their job well and learn from it.
Parent Perspective
Q: As a parent, what do you have to go through alongside your child?
A: I have to teach my child to manage 8 classes, and that is a challenge for all parents. It is a whole new workload and for the diploma program, the tasks take long chunks of time and energy. Alongside my child, I go through with them the college applications, extended essays, internal assessments, and the above and beyond class work. All these tasks teach a valuable set of skills that will help beyond high school.
Q: Do you see the IB as a great program for your daughter/kids and how has your daughter benefited through the program?
A: The International mindness, characteristics, and profiles built into students help them become citizens we want in this world and whatever profession they choose.
The IB program is best suited for students that are highly self motivated and has the rigor to require this ability to do their work when needed too. Great benefits come out of this experience like allowing her to go to the college of her choice and is likely to get scholarship money.
Q: What worries do you have for your child with this program
A: Sometimes the workload is pretty intense. Which results to her having less sleep and high stress levels.
Q: Would you recommend this to parents considering this school?
A: Yes because if your child fits the kid to succeed, it is a very good option. But it isn't for every child.
