Mrs. Jamil- IA Counselor
Q: As a counselor you meet many students, what can you tell me about the community here and the individuals themselves?
A: There is a diverse community where students are from all different backgrounds and places. Students also have a strong desire to learn and engage in all subjects and have a lot of determination. The community is special and different as we build our own sense of unity and passion for learning.
Q: High school is tough in general, and IA increases that difficulty, if someone is going through a hard time, but doesn’t know who to tell, what would you tell them about seeking the counselors for help?
A: It is a necessity! Counselors keep everything confidential unless you are hurting yourself, something/one is hurting someone else, or someone is hurting you. But besides that, you are free and open to talk to us, and have nothing to be scared of. What happens in this room, stays in the room. It is also very easy and accessible to reach us by signing up in the binder in the office, simply asking your teacher to see the counselor, emailing us, or just stopping us in the hallway. It is essential to reach out for support personally, academically, or about anything. Teachers are also here to help and glad too. Even if your are doing okay, it is important to talk to teachers or counselors and be comfortable, as building relationships is very significant and special!
Q: Would you say there is a lot of drama at this school?
A: Drama is different for everyone and is defined in several opinioned ways. But unlike any other setting, drama will be there if you create it. At IA, many are very mature and respectful and drama doesn't need to exist if you remove yourself from the situation.
Q: Any advice for new freshmen coming to this school?
A: Reach out for support by going to the counselors, get involved with the school with all the clubs and activities, reach out to friends, treat people the way you want to be treated, and if you are in a friend group that is toxic, slowly make new friends, talk it out, and find your identity!
